Verdict: Southern Rock with powerful female vocals.
A few Southern Rock albums have made it into my collection, but this is the first one that I've reviewed one for Mood Swings. "Bring It On Home" - isn't that also the name of an album or a song by The Outlaws? BMJ are the first Southern Rock band that I've come across with a female singer. Michelle Howes has a deep husky voice, the result being that BMJ come across as Lynyrd Skynyrd with Janice Joplin on vocals. BMJ's own description of their music is "rock n' roll with a little bit of soul".

The opening tracks, "Shine" & "Find Your Way", are an uptempo start featuring some bluesy southern boogie. "Drop Of Salvation" cools things down with a slow southern tinged blues number. "Big City Small Town" is still on a slow theme, but this time with a country feel and comes close to being the album highlight. The guitars are cranked up again for "Precious Thing" but the overall tempo is still pedestrian. The next three tunes, "Ride That Mile", "Serpent Sleeping" (shades of ZZ Top) and "Before Sunrise", all feature more typical uptempo southern rock. "Lovestruck (Young & Wasted)" is the highlight of the album with it's driving southern boogie. "Bring It On Home" follows on well from "Lovestruck".

Fashionable? Hell no!!! But when was the last time I cared about what was fashionable in music. It is always more satisfying when a band stick to their guns and play the sort of music they can get passionate about. This has wetted my appetite for some more Southern Rock. However, at the moment, I'm in the mood for something that rocks out a bit more, so I'll have to dig out my Molly Hatchett album listen to "Boogie No More". Maybe after that I'll come back and have another listen to this.
