| Verdict: Guitar driven pop with chart potential. | ||
| Soundbite are an Edinburgh-based 3-piece rock band consisting of Geoff Cawood (27, guitar & vocals), Keith Westhead (24, bass guitar) and Nick Church (27, drums). The band formed in the early 90s, and played together in 2 previous band before forming Soundbite. "Tearing Away" is their debut EP. "Morning Sun" is a bright and breezy start to the album. "All The Same" features more bright and breezy rock inspired pop, but ups the quality levels. "Tearaway" sets a gentler pace and introduces a slight jazzy feel to proceedings. After proving they can master the bright breezy pop angle, they go for a slower more thoughtful approach on "Sometime Now" and diverge into a nice jazzy bridge mid-tune. Whilst I struggled to think of comparisons for the first four tunes, the closing duo, "Closer" & "Let It Go" remind me of REM. Whilst the majority of music I buy tends to have more of a 'rock-vibe' to it than this, it is what I would like to hear when I switch on the radio. Tucked inside these chart friendly tunes is some intelligent guitar work which is what won me over in the end. Following in the tradition of bands like Deacon Blue and Del Amitri, Soundbite are another Scottish band who brigde the gap between pop and rock sucessfully. Both Deacon Blue and Del Amitri have had hit singles, so if people would stop listening to all that Ibiza dance crap that seems to fill the charts these days we might get some decent music like this on the radio. If you tastes extend beyond AOR and you're on the lookout for some good lightweight pop with a rock basis then Soundbite are well worth checking out. | ||
