Verdict: A more enjoyable instrumental experience than I had anticipated.
Instrumental guitar albums! Bloody hard to review! You won't find too many instrumentals albums reviewed at Mood Swings. I always think that if you play guitar yourself then there is lots to listen to and perhaps emulate, but to people like me with all the musical talent of a brick, then they're a bit of a daunting prospect. However, I'm not totally against them & albums by Marty Friedman, Al Di Meola, Tommy Denander & Liquid Tension Experiment have all found their way into my collection.

Uncaged has got big riffs going on in the background for the lead guitar to march all over and it is a vibrant start to the album (and a very pleasant surprise). I don't even miss the vocals on this one.'Casbah' has a slightly exotic feel to it and the Al Di Meola album that I have springs to mind. 'The War' starts gently with some military style drumming before we're hit with machine gun emulation on the guitar and drums. 'Blue Breeze' is fairly standard uptempo guitar instrumental album stuff and doesn't appeal to me that much. 'Meld' sounds like a brief impersonation of Ritchie Blackmore to these untrained ears. Reverie takes a more gentle approach and has a slight Southern/Country Rock feel to it. This tunes gets me back on side again. Overdrive is back into the same vein as 'Blue Breeze', but this time the tune inproves during the second half when it slows down, but still features some impressive guitar pyrotechnics.

Yontz at least realises that an album full of instrumentals is a bit much for most people, so he employs the voice of Jennifer Carpenter on a cover of Jimmy Hendrix's Little Wing. Now we know one of his heroes.

And there you have it. I'm amazed that I managed to find something to say about almost every track. I enjoyed listened to this more than I had initially imagined. A couple of more songs featuring vocals would have aided my enjoyment. Check out the web site to hear what Yontz sounds like for yourself.
