Verdict: I've seen the light as far as Von Groove are concerned.
It happened with Bad Habit, now it has happened again with Von Groove. My first experiences of a band when they go for a more adult oriented sound and turn down the rock factor. Well, that is what I've been hearing about this new Von Groove album. In Von Groove's case it has got to be a subtler transition, right? Until I get to hear their other albums, I can't say, but I'm pleased with the rock content of this album.

In fact, I'm very pleased with almost everything about this album. This is the type of music that I love. It is AOR approached from a hard melodic rock perspective.

'It Should Have Been Me' is a big Def Lep style tune which, if the slow burning rocking of opener 'Test Of Faith' didn't convince you of the albums potential, this one will. 'Foolin' Yourself' & 'I Saw The Light' successfully continue the melodic rock attack. 'Tell It To Me' is an infectious ditty that has you singing along by the second time the chorus comes around. And similar comments apply to the high-octane 'Anything For My Baby'. 'Rock & Roll Station' is the hardest rocking song on offer and, to be honest, it is my least favourite on the album.

And so onto those quieter moments. 'Back In Love Again' is a traditional power ballad. 'The Damage Is Done' & 'On The Run' are both acoustic based ballads, which if listened to on their own may end up sounding a bit on the wimpy side, but which I think work in the context of the album. 'Only Love' is a semi-ballad and whenever I write 'semi-ballad' I always think of the masters of the genre - Journey, who are suitable reference point here. Praise indeed.

As I said somewhere near the start of this review, I've been enjoying this album. It has been fighting it out with the new Mark Spiro album for the top MTM release reviewed in this month's update.
